Why Believe? William James and the Challenge to Faith

Why is one a Christian? Can one defend one’s faith rationally against challenges to it? The psychologist and philosopher William James addressed these problems over 100 years ago, and his reflections are still valid today. In this course we shall attempt a close reading and critical analysis of his essay "The Will to Believe" and other related materials.

Taught by Dr. Laura Nelson. Laura is a parishioner at the Cathedral of the Incarnation. She received her Ph.D. in Philosophy from Fordham University, and has taught at Colleges in the NY Metropolitan area, including Hofstra, Molloy, The New School, and Drew. She has published in a number of academic and non-academic platforms, including PublicSeminar.org and Medium.com.
