The Stewart Historic Buildings Preservation Fund:
Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future
The Stewart Historic Buildings Preservation Fund is dedicated to honoring and safeguarding the architectural legacy of Alexander T. Stewart and Cornelia Stewart—visionaries whose influence shaped the very heart of Garden City, New York. At the center of this legacy stands the awe-inspiring Cathedral of the Incarnation, a national historic landmark and a living testament to the Stewarts’ enduring impact.

Our mission is to raise awareness and rally support to preserve these historic treasures for generations to come. Through public and private donations, we fund the careful restoration, modernization, and maintenance of these remarkable properties. Every dollar contributes to protecting not just bricks and mortar, but stories, artistry, and a shared heritage that still echoes through every arch and stone.
In addition to the Cathedral, the Fund supports the preservation of several other significant structures:

See House (36 Cathedral Avenue): This historic residence has served as the home for the bishops of Long Island and is an integral part of the Cathedral Close.

The Carriage House (71 4th Street): A contributing structure within the A.T. Stewart Era Historic District, reflecting the architectural harmony of the planned community.

Apostle House (32 Cathedral Avenue): One of the original Garden City “Apostle Houses”, built during Stewart’s time, exemplifying the distinctive Victorian architecture that characterizes Garden City’s early residential design.
